CAO Points & College Entry.
Qualifax.ie (available by clicking HERE), provides an excellent starting point for College information. For example if you click on ‘Search all Courses’ on the home page and then write in ‘Law’ and select ‘Higher Education CAO’ in the ‘Course Type’ drop-down menu, you’ll see a huge list of Law related courses. This is absolutely crucial to read through since it will outline amongst other things the minimum entry requirements for each course. Being aware of these minimum entry requirements is vital when it comes to selecting Leaving Certificate subjects in 5th year - it has happened that students scoring more than enough points for their chosen course have been shocked to find out they actually aren’t entitled to a place because they failed to complete the minimum entry requirements. For example, have you any idea how many science subjects you need to have studied to get into medical courses, or whether you have to take specific Business subjects to be eligible for Commerce courses? Get on to Qualifiax and check this all out before you commit to your Leaving Cert Subjects.
The CAO website (available by clicking HERE) then provides the method by which you can apply for thousands of third level courses. Once you have achieved the minimum entry requirements, most of the courses are offered based on your Leaving Cert ‘Points’. Your points are calculated using your best six subject results, with the points for each calculated using the table HERE.
